Welcome to the Clarinet Mentors newsletter. I am so pleased to be part of this great worldwide community of clarinetists that includes you. If you have just joined the Clarinet Mentors community, welcome aboard! I hope you learn many things here that make your clarinet playing more fun and easy.
I realize that today's newsletter is later than usual, and I apologize to those of you that look forward to receiving clarinet pointers on a regular basis. It has been extremely busy for me! In the past couple of weeks I have been involved with a film sound track, a musical soundtrack, Mahler's version of Beethoven's 9th Symphony (which has 4 clarinetists, and a "bells up" moment), a couple of regular orchestra concerts, and a trio performance. It seems like all of my spring concerts were clustered into about 3 weeks.
As I sent out my last newsletter, I was about to go on holidays with my family to Maui. I wanted to do something epic to celebrate my birthday, and have some down time before the crazy month of April. I said that I would post a photo, so here it is. This was me, greeting a new year and birthday with sunrise on top of the Haleakalā crater at the crack of dawn. It was a good way to welcome the day! Sometimes it is nice to welcome life with view of spectacular beginnings, such as this.

I have been taking a few clarinet lessons myself recently to improve my own playing. I always appreciate feedback from great teachers. I was surprised to discover that I was letting some very basic clarinet concepts slip in my own playing. It may have been in a very small way, but enough to impede my best sound and ease of performance. Hearing someone else say to me, what I really already knew how to do, was a well-needed reminder.
With that in mind, I bring you a five-minute lesson (plus a one minute intro) that will likely be a reminder of important "basics" to many of you. These concepts are always worth focusing on. Ricardo Morales is a clarinetist who can truly navigate the full range of clarinet timbre and technic with supreme artistry. His tone colours and fluid playing are well illustrated in this recording of the Leshnoff Clarinet Concerto, which was commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra for Ricardo to perform. This is not a professional recording, but even so, it does illustrate the beauty of Ricardo's playing. This composition is very compelling and showcases many colours of the orchestra as well with some challenging parts from all sections of the group.
